What is the difference between Waynapicchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain?

Difference between Waynapicchu and Machu Picchu Mountain

If you are planning to visit the Inca citadel, you have probably asked yourself:
Which is better: climbing Waynapicchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain?

Both offer incredible views, but have very different characteristics that can influence your decision. In this blog we explain in a clear way the difference between these two mountains so you can choose the one that best suits you.

Location and views
  • Waynapicchu Mountain:
It is the mountain that appears in the background in the classic photo of Machu Picchu. From the top, you will have a frontal and elevated view of the entire citadel, ideal for panoramic photos.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain:
It is on the opposite side, higher than Waynapicchu, and offers a wider view of the valley, the nearby mountains and a different perspective of the citadel, although more distant.

2. Height and difficulty

  • Waynapicchu:
    • Height: 2,720 m above sea level.
    • Difficulty: High. The path is steep, with narrow stairs, zigzagging and vertigo zones. Not recommended for people with fear of heights or physical problems.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain:
    • Height: 3,082 m above sea level.
    • Difficulty: Moderate to high. It is a longer climb but with a wider and safer path. Ideal if you want to do a good trek without so much risk.

3. Duration of the tour

  • Waynapicchu: between 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours in total.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain: between 2 and 3 hours in total (round trip).

Both require good physical condition and early arrival to enjoy the scenery without haste.

4. Access and tickets

Both mountains require special tickets that must be purchased in advance, as space is limited.

  • Waynapicchu:
    • Maximum 200 people per shift (two shifts per day).
    • Tickets: “Machu Picchu + Waynapicchu”.
    • They sell out quickly, sometimes 2 or 3 months in advance.
  • Machu Picchu Mountain:
    • More daily availability.
    • Tickets: “Machu Picchu + Mountain”.
    • Ideal if you can’t find tickets for Waynapicchu.
