Huchuy Qosqo Trek: 2-Day Hike to the Sacred Valley

The Huchuy Qosqo Trek is one of the shortest and most scenic routes in Cusco, ideal for travelers seeking an authentic Andean experience without committing to a long hike. This two-day journey combines breathtaking landscapes, Inca history, and living culture in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

What Is the Huchuy Qosqo Trek?

The Huchuy Qosqo trek (meaning “Little Cusco”) is a moderate hike that connects the city of Cusco with the town of Lamay, passing through ancient Inca trails and traditional villages. Unlike more demanding routes like the Inca Trail, this trek offers a more intimate connection with nature and local communities.

2-Day Huchuy Qosqo Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Tambomachay – Pucamarca – Huchuy Qosqo

Our tour begins with a 6:00 am pick-up from your hotel, heading towards the Tambomachay archaeological site. From there, we’ll begin our hike through the Puna landscape and over the Sicllaccasa Pass (4020 m / 13186 ft).

At this pass, we’ll find archaeological remains and wild crops, such as tarwi, and a large number of cacti. We’ll then continue towards the Queullococha Pass (4185 m / 13727 ft), where we can observe the snow-capped peaks of VerĂ³nica, Pitusiray, and Chicon.

As we pass by Lake Queullococha, we’ll see Andean geese, ducks, and small fish, and then we’ll ascend to the Challu Challu Pass (4220 m / 13842 ft). We’ll observe the plains of Chinchero and the Piuray and Qoricocha lagoons, then ascend to the fourth pass at Rumicruz (4230 m / 13874 ft).

Next, we’ll head to the Inca rock quarry (4220 m / 13842 ft), where the rocks were extracted to build Huchuy Qosqo. Finally, we’ll descend to the community of Pucamarca (4010 m / 13153 ft), where we’ll have dinner and camp for the night.

Day 2: Huchuy Qosqo – Cusco

After breakfast, we will continue our hike downhill to Huchuy Qosqo towards the Leon Punku canyon. We will continue our trek through the remains of an Inca bridge and trail. This canyon features geological formations surrounded by majestic rocks and cliffs that direct the river towards Huchuy Qosqo (3,600 m/11,808 ft).

Huchuy Qosqo is an Inca archaeological complex with impressive architecture, including a large open ceremonial center. Upon arrival at Huchuy Qosqo, we will have a panoramic view of the Sacred Valley and the Vilcanota River. The guide will then give you a tour of the archaeological site. Afterward, we will hike for about two hours to the next point (4,200 m/13,776 ft), descending for about two hours to reach Taucca, where we will have lunch.

Finally, we will take the bus back to Cusco, and our team will drop you off at your hotel.
